Chris Nungesser, Board Chair

Chris Nungesser has lived in the Charleston area for most of his life and he feels grateful to call the Lowcountry home.

Issues of housing, hunger, and poverty matter to Chris very much. He has volunteered with a number of organizations in the Charleston area working to address these issues, including Lowcountry Food Bank and Trident United Way. For over a decade, Chris was with One80 Place working to end homelessness. He has served in emergency shelters and in the community doing street outreach. He has also worked at the regional and state level to coordinate efforts to end homelessness.

Chris believes that Charleston is at its best when it works well for all its citizens. He is grateful to serve on the CCHRA board to provide affordable housing for our community.

Commissioner Thomas Hummel 

Commissioner John M. Thomas, Jr., MA Essayist

John M. Thomas, Jr., is an essayist and has engaged in public service since the 1980's. A graduate of Porter-Gaud School, the University of South Carolina, and The Citadel, Thomas has been involved with attempting to solve the homelessness problem as well as working in disaster relief, public health, and other areas of emergency work. Thomas' writing interests include African and Middle Eastern politics and school shooting prevention.

Curtis Thompson, Commissioner

Betty Gonzalez, Commissioner

Mrs. Betty Gonzalez was born and raised in Charleston SC. She graduated from Charles A. Brown High School and attended Barber-Scotia College in Concord, NC. She worked in business and as a machinist before retiring in 2010. She resides at the Joseph Floyd Manor in the CCHRA, where she has lived for over five years. Her mission as a Board of Commissioner is to care for the housing of senior citizens of Charleston. She loves to garden, cook and is the unofficial fashionista of the Manor. She attends Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the Upper Peninsula.
